What is Otaku?

Otaku (おたく/オタク^?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly (but not limited to) anime andmanga. The exact origin of the term is unknown with various research books discussing the topic, noting the terms existence since the 1970s and the first published usage in the Macross anime in 1982. In Japan, otaku is a broad and largely negative term to define the obsessive interests of any type. The negativity stemming from the reporting on Tsutomu Miyazaki's as "The Otaku Murder" in 1989 and the media incorrectly identifying another murder, Kaoru Kobayashi, as an otaku. English usage of the term refers to an obsessive interest in anime and manga, but lacks the stigma of its Japanese usage.

What is anime?

Anime (Japanese: アメ Hepburn: Anime^?, [a.ni.me] ( listen); English ⁱ/ˈænɨmeɪ/ or /ˈɑːnɨmeɪ/ or /ˈænɨmə/; anə-may or ani-may) are Japaneseanimated productions featuring hand-drawn or computer animation. The word is the abbreviated pronunciation of "animation" in Japanese. The term, "anime", itself did not emerge until the mid-1980s,^[1] and its intended meaning of the term sometimes varies depending on the context.^[2] Among Japanese, the term references all animation.^[3] In English, the term is defined as a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastic themes.^[4][5] Arguably, the stylization approach to the meaning may open up the possibility of anime produced in countries, other than Japan.^[6][7][8] Yet, for simplicity, many Westerners strictly view anime as an animation product from Japan.^[5]

While the earliest known Japanese animation dates to 1917, and many original Japanese animations were produced in the ensuing decades. The characteristic anime style developed in the 1960s—notably with the work of Osamu Tezuka—and became known outside Japan in the 1980s.^[9]Anime has a large audience in Japan and recognition throughout the world. Distributors can release anime via television broadcasts, directly to video, or theatrically, as well as online.

Anime is primarily used for animated television series, featured films, and Internet-based releases. Both hand-drawn and computer-animated anime exist. The style is also used in video games and commercials. Yet, these are not explicitly labeled as anime but rather by their respective media. Furthermore, anime encompasses most, if not all, genres of fiction.^[10] Finally, anime utilizes various media as sources, particularly print media, likemanga, literature, and other works. As the market for anime increased in Japan, it also gained popularity in East and Southeast Asia. Anime is currently popular in many different regions around the world.
